Riding the Wiss
Wissahickon Valley Park in Philadelphia is one of those places that you can love and hate at the same time. I’m sorry, “hate” is a strong word…I should say loathe. This trail system runs along the Wissahickon Creek in Philly and is within city limits!
If you have ever visited “The Wiss” for a ride you know that it has some punishing climbs, that’s where the loathing comes in. If you ride a “full loop”, about 19 miles, you are going to get in a little more than 3000ft of climbing. It’s not all smooth packed tapered climbs, its loose rock or big rock steps with steep bits. I love planning a trip to ride at the Wiss knowing I’m going to get my butt kicked on some climbs but also get some good descents at the same time.
I recently planned a trip to The Wiss to ride with my buddy Zach Shearon with the goal to clear my head and get some fun descending in. I knew he would take me on a ride that would allow us to hit some of the better spots. We’d wind up doing an hour and half ride with few interruptions for other trail users.
Despite all the tough climbs, you have some really scenic views along the creek, it feels as though you’re in the mountains somewhere.
